  • History of Salsa—And How You Can Spice Yours Up!

What’s more than 1,000 years old and currently stored in your refrigerator?

Ok, maybe the salsa itself isn’t that old (thankfully), but humans have been making salsa for thousands of years, going back to the days of the Inca, Aztecs and Mayans. Back then salsa wasn’t made with chile peppers—it was a simpler concoction that used wild tomatoes as a base.
    Bowl of tomato sauce
Chile peppers weren’t used for culinary uses until the Spanish conquistadors arrived on the Mexican peninsula. The Conquistadors were probably the first group to combine tomatoes with spicy peppers, usually using it as a condiment served on meat dishes. Salsa spread to the Southwest and 1916, it was commercially produced. That’s even earlier than the mass production of BBQ sauce!

Today, salsa lovers can spice up their favorite with bulk wholesale chile sold by The Chile Guy.

How to Use Chile Peppers in Salsa

Traditional salsa includes tomatoes, chile peppers, onions and garlic. And while this classic combination has been well-loved for centuries, creating new versions is an art. You can give your salsa a Mexican flare by adding cilantro. Try the following twists on traditional salsa and you’ll be sure to gain a reputation as a connoisseur:

    HOT Spicy Salsa

Take your usual salsa and add some hot habanero peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. You can test the heat by adding a few habanero pepper flakes and tasting to see if it is to your liking, or you can use one habanero pepper, seeded, and add it to about ten cups of salsa. Yes, habanero peppers really are that hot!

    Sweet & Spicy Salsa

If super hot salsa isn’t your style, why not try something spicy and sweet? A sweet and spicy salsa includes mango and avocado added to your salsa, plus a small amount of cayenne pepper to give it a little bite.

    Tomatillo Salsa Verde

If you’re looking for something completely different, why not try tomatillo? Tomatillo is a member of the nightshade family and is green, about the size of a small tomato. By combining tomatillos with serrano peppers, cilantro, onion and garlic, you create salsa verde that brings a citrus like flavor to any dish.
